What is blistering on car paint?

Also calledBubbling, Moisture blistering, Moisture blisters, Pimples

Bubbles under the paint with no brown or orange in them are not rust. The paint is being pushed off what is under it. Moisture that got under it, solvent sealed in when it was painted, or dirt that stopped it sticking. It is common on panels painted before, and where water sits at the bottom of doors.

What kind of repair does it need?

Stripping the blistered area back to paint that still sticks, finding what is under it, then priming and painting. The repair goes out to where the paint still sticks, which is usually wider than the blisters.

Class of work Strip back to where it still bonds, then refinish.

The repair goes out to where the paint still sticks. That is wider than the blisters you can see.

What to do next

Do not press or pick the blisters. Breaking them lets water and air in. Book it rather than watching it. Ask the shop to tell you what they find underneath. Blisters over bare steel are a rust job. If the panel was painted before, say so. Trapped solvent and poor preparation are workmanship faults.
