What is burn through on car paint?

A polishing machine ran on an edge or a body line long enough to cut through the clear coat, and sometimes the colour. It happens on edges because paint is thinnest there. It looks like a small dull, flat, lighter patch, with no scratch you can feel.

What kind of repair does it need?

Painting. There is no polish fix, because polishing removes clear coat and the clear coat is what is missing. It has to be put back on.

Class of work Painted again - by whoever painted it.

This is a workmanship fault. The question is not what it costs you. Paid work must be done with care and skill, so it belongs back with the shop that did it.

What to do next

This is workmanship, not wear. Go back to whoever polished it before paying anyone else. Say burn-through, which is the trade term. Paid work must be done with care and skill. In Australia that right comes from the Australian Consumer Law, on top of any warranty the shop gives.
