What is a colour coat scratch across a panel?

The mark shows your own colour, but duller or lighter than the paint beside it. That is the colour layer itself, exposed. The clear coat above it has been cut through, which is why the line has no shine.

What kind of repair does it need?

Painting the panel. Polishing cannot put back clear coat or colour that is gone. The panel is prepared, the colour matched and sprayed, and it is clear coated. The colour should also be blended into the panel beside it.

Class of work Panel refinish, blended into the panel beside it.

The panel is prepared, the colour is matched and sprayed, and clear coat goes over it. Metallic and pearl colours are harder to blend than solid colours. Aluminium panels need different preparation from steel. Both add to the job.

What to do next

Get two quotes and compare what each includes. Ask if the price includes blending into the next panel. On metallic or pearl paint, a panel painted without blending can look a different colour in some light. If it is a bumper, ask if they do it on or off the car. Tell them if the panel is aluminium.
