What is colour fade on car paint?
The colour is wrong, not just dull. That points past the clear coat. Sunlight breaks down some pigments in the colour coat. Reds and blacks often go first. Flat panels fade most, so a faded roof over normal doors is the classic sign.
What kind of repair does it need?
A machine polish may partly improve it. Where the colour itself has gone, the faded panels are painted.
The panel is prepared, the colour is matched and sprayed, and clear coat goes over it. Metallic and pearl colours are harder to blend than solid colours. Aluminium panels need different preparation from steel. Both add to the job.
What to do next
Ask a detailer to try polishing one small area first. If it does not change, go to a panel shop, priced per panel. Ask how they will blend into the panels beside it. A freshly matched panel next to a faded one can look worse. Fade is wear, so insurance will not usually cover it.
