What is heavy stone chipping on a car?

Once the leading edge is peppered, these stop being separate chips. The surface has been sandblasted by years of road gravel. Touching in each one would leave the panel covered in dots.

What kind of repair does it need?

Painting the affected panel. Past about ten chips on one panel, spraying the panel is usually better value and always looks better than filling them one by one.

The panel is prepared, the colour is matched and sprayed, and clear coat goes over it. Metallic and pearl colours are harder to blend than solid colours. Aluminium panels need different preparation from steel. Both add to the job.

Go to a panel shop for the bonnet or bumper. Get both prices: chip touch-up and a panel respray. Then choose. If you do a lot of highway driving, ask about paint protection film on the front afterwards, or you will need this again.
