What is surface rust on a car?

Light brown staining with the paint still smooth is rust at its earliest stage. Something has chipped through to the steel and it has started to rust. It has not lifted the paint or eaten into the metal yet. This is the cheap stage.

What kind of repair does it need?

The area is taken back to clean metal, treated, primed and painted. It stays small and local at this stage.

Class of work Cut back to sound metal, then refinish.

At this stage it is a paint job with some metal preparation first. Leave it and it stops being a paint job.

What to do next
