What is crevice corrosion on a car?

Rust coming out of a seam, sill, wheel arch or door bottom has usually been going for years, from the inside. These are places where two pieces of metal are folded or welded together. They trap water and salt in a gap that never dries. What you can see is where it finally came through.

What kind of repair does it need?

Cutting out the rusty metal and welding in new. You cannot treat rust that is coming from behind a panel. On sills and arches this is metal work, and paint is the smallest part of the bill. A small arch repair and a structural sill repair are very different jobs.

Class of work Cut out and weld in new metal.

Metal work, not paint work. Ask whether they will cut out and weld or just fill. Filler over rust like this comes back.

What to do next

Get it checked soon, and have the underside checked too. Check the same spot on the other side of the car. Ask if they will cut out and weld or just fill, and whether it affects anything structural. Filler over rust like this comes back. If the repair gets close to what the car is worth, get the number so you can decide.
