What are swirl marks on car paint?
Also calledCar wash abrasions, Marring, Spider Web Swirls
Fine circular scratches that show in direct sun are wash damage. They are thousands of tiny scratches in the clear coat from grit dragged across the paint. Automatic brush washes, dirty sponges and old towels are the usual cause.
What kind of repair does it need?
A machine polish. The clear coat is cut back just below the scratches so the surface is level again.
Almost always the polish. Marks cut in deep, usually by a rotary machine in the wrong hands, may be too deep to polish out safely. Then that panel is painted.
What to do next
Book a detailer. It will come back unless the washing changes. Use two buckets and a clean mitt, and stay out of brush car washes. Clear coat is thin and every polish takes some, so this is not something to do every year.
