How to identify an unknown mark on car paint
Two things are already clear. The panel has not changed shape, so this is not panel work. That rules out the most expensive outcomes. What is not clear is whether the mark sits on top of your paint or is cut into it, because its colour could not be seen.
What kind of repair does it need?
One of two jobs. A deposit on top is removed by a detailer and nothing is repainted. A mark cut into the paint may polish out if it is shallow. If it went into the colour or deeper, the panel is painted.
A mark sitting on top of the paint is a detailer's job. A mark cut into the paint may polish out if it is shallow, or need painting if it is deep. One look in daylight tells you which.
What to do next
One look settles it. Wash the area, take the car into daylight, and look straight into the mark. A different colour sitting on the surface, such as another car's paint or rubber, is a deposit and a detailer's job. Grey, white or bare metal at the bottom of a line means it is cut through your colour. A fine white line with your colour still around it is usually a light scratch, and a detailer may polish it out. Your own colour, duller or lighter, means it is cut into the paint. Once you can see it, check it again.
