Can a windscreen crack be repaired?
A crack means the break has already run. Heat, cold and the body flexing over bumps can make it grow. Hosing a hot car can do it. In Queensland, a crack over 150mm in the driver's half of the wiper area fails inspection if it goes through more than one layer of glass or gets in the driver's way.
What kind of repair does it need?
Usually a new windscreen. The old one is cut out and a new one is bonded in. If your car has a camera behind the glass for lane keeping or auto braking, most manufacturers call for it to be recalibrated. Some repairers can fix cracks up to 30cm. Ask before you replace.
Includes recalibrating any camera mounted behind the glass. This is glass work, not paint work.
What to do next
Call an auto glass specialist. Ask two things: is the glass original brand or aftermarket, and is camera recalibration included. Check your policy. Glass cover is often an optional extra, and some policies cover the first glass claim with no excess. A crack in front of the driver is the one to deal with first.
