What is filler adhesion failure?

Also calledAdhesion Loss (Polyesters), Poor adhesion, Poor adhesion - polyester stopper

Bare metal or a flat grey layer under a patch that came off means an old repair is letting go. The body filler has lost its grip on the metal, and the paint came off with it. The causes include poor preparation, filler that does not suit galvanised steel, too much or too little hardener, or overheating while drying.

What kind of repair does it need?

The old repair is taken out and done again. The failed filler is removed, the metal is prepared properly, then the repair is rebuilt and painted. Painting over it is not a repair, because it will come off the same way.

Class of work Stripped and painted again - by whoever painted it.

A workmanship fault, stripped back to bare metal or to the filler first. Paid work must be done with care and skill, so it belongs back with the shop that did it.

What to do next

Go back to whoever did the original repair first. This is a preparation fault in their work. Say you can see bare metal or grey filler under the lifted area. If a shop offers to sand the edges and repaint without removing the old filler, get a second opinion.
