What is paint dieback?

Also calledHazing Dulling, Loss of gloss, Poor Hold Out

A finish that looked glossy when you collected it and went dull over the next weeks has died back. Dieback is loss of gloss after the paint has dried. Causes include heavy coats, too little time between coats, and a drying cycle that was cut short.

What kind of repair does it need?

Sanding and polishing back to gloss, once the paint has fully cured. Mild cases are sanded and polished, and severe ones are painted again. Usually it does not need repainting, because the paint is all there.

Class of work Flatted and polished - by whoever painted it.

The cheaper kind of workmanship fault, and the easier conversation. One warning: this is fresh paint being cut back. Cutting too far on an edge or a body line causes burn-through, so watch for it.

What to do next

Go back and call it dieback. Ask for it to be sanded and polished rather than resprayed. Paid work must be done with care and skill. Do not polish it yourself. On paint that is still curing, polish just hides the problem for a while.
