What is panel gap misalignment on a car?

An uneven gap next to an undamaged panel means the hit went past the panel and into what holds it. Hinges, brackets and mounts bend more easily than the panel itself. So a car can look almost fine and still have a bonnet sitting high on one side. Shops read gaps to tell whether the structure behind has moved.

What kind of repair does it need?

Measuring and realigning. It may be an adjustment, a bent hinge or bracket replaced, or pulling the structure back on a frame bench. Any paint work is at the edges and is the small part.

Class of work Realignment, or chassis work where the structure itself has moved.

It may be an adjustment, a bent hinge or bracket replaced, or frame work if the structure moved. Get it measured before any paint work on that corner.

What to do next

Get it measured, not eyeballed, before you agree to any paint work on that corner. Have the panel aligned before it is painted. Open and close the door or bonnet and listen for catching. Look at the whole gap. If this came from a crash, mention alignment to your insurer.
