Why does my respray have no gloss?

Also calledDull Finish, Hazing Dulling, Poor Gloss, Poor Hold Out

A panel that is smooth to touch but has no shine never got its gloss. The causes include primer that soaked up the topcoat, the wrong thinner, poor preparation, drying too slowly, or polishing before it hardened. This is different from gloss that sank weeks later, and from paint dulled by years of sun.

What kind of repair does it need?

Compounding and polishing usually brings the shine back. If it is too dull for that, the topcoat is rubbed down and painted again.

Class of work Flatted and polished, or painted again if it goes deep — by whoever painted it.

Depth decides it, and either way it is part of work you already paid for. If the fault is in the clear coat, it is sanded flat and polished. If it is in the colour underneath, the panel is painted again.

What to do next

Go back to whoever painted it, and do not wait. Say the panel is smooth but has had no shine since you collected the car. That matters, because a shop may blame age or washing. If they say it is oxidation or needs a paid detail, get a second opinion.
