What is mapping on car paint?

Also calledBullseyes, Edge mapping, Edge Mapping (Shrinkage), Edge Ringing, Featheredge Lifting, Featheredge splitting, Flatting marks, Lining up, Scratch swelling, Tramlining

A halo, ring or shadow tracing the edge of an old repair is mapping, also called edge ringing. Solvent in the new paint softened the edge of the old repair underneath. It swelled, and the outline now shows through. It is a preparation fault. The old edges needed sealing first.

What kind of repair does it need?

Sanding the area back, sealing the old edge properly, then painting again.

Class of work Painted again - by whoever painted it.

This is a workmanship fault. The question is not what it costs you. Paid work must be done with care and skill, so it belongs back with the shop that did it.

What to do next

Look for the shape. Straight edges and corners are not natural. Photograph it at a low angle. Paid work must be done with care and skill. Tell the shop you can see the outline of the earlier repair. It shows you know the preparation did not deal with it.
