What is a run in car paint?

Also calledCurtains, Drips, Gun spits, Hangers, Overloading, Runs, Runs & Sags, Runs and Sags, Sagging, Sags, Signatures

Too much paint went on an upright panel, or it was too cold, so it sagged before it set. It is a thick spot that ran and then hardened.

What kind of repair does it need?

Sanding flat and polishing, if the run is in the clear coat. It works because a run is extra paint, so there is plenty to cut. A run in the colour coat of a basecoat system needs painting. Metallic paints normally need repainting, because cutting disturbs the flake.

Class of work Flatted and polished, or painted again if it goes deep.

Depth decides it. If there is enough good clear coat above the fault, it is sanded flat and polished. If levelling it would go through the clear, or the fault is in the colour, the panel is painted again.

What to do next

Take it back to whoever sprayed it. Levelling runs is normal finishing work they should have done. If you are paying someone else, a detailer who does wet sanding can do it. Do not try it yourself. It is easy to go through the clear coat.
